Five Plumbing Tips For Every Homeowner
Once the dream of homeownership has been fulfilled, the reality of owning a house comes into play, as invariably there will be repairs that have to be carried out. While some issues have to tackled by professionals, there are others that are basic do-it-yourself jobs that require no special tools or skills. Aside from repairs, there are also several steps that you can take to ensure that your plumbing is working efficiently.
To help you understand what these steps are, R&D Plumbing and Heating has put together a list of five plumbing tips to help every homeowner save money and prevent water damages.
Tip #1: Drain your garden hose.
Before storing, always remove and drain your garden hoses. Not removing or leaving water in a hose could cause a split hose bib, which can cause a lot of damage. Moreover, buying a new garden hose every year is not fun.
Tip #2: Inspect your hot water tank.
Ensure that the venting on your hot water tank is checked yearly for cracks, holes, and loose fittings.
Tip #3: Check for toilet tank leaks.
Check your toilet tanks, make sure they are not leaking. A couple of drops of food coloring in the tank does the trick. If you see color in the bowl, you could be spending hundreds of dollars a year for nothing.
Tip #4: Test your sump pump system regularly.
It would be best if you exercised your sump pump system by pouring some water into the sump a couple of times per year. This helps to prevent seizing and gives you peace of mind that the sump pump system is working and helps prevent a major incident.
Tip #5: Have a Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitor in your home.
Make sure you have a CO monitor in your home, one that gives you a ready below 9 PPM. All of the CO detectors I have found do not start giving a warning until 30 PPM for 15 minutes. Check yours out to make sure they are working and you have the right one to protect you and your family.
